<p class="title rtejustify">Dr Bhimanagouda Patil, a Kannadiga in the US, has been elected chair of horticulture for human health for the International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS).</p>.<p class="bodytext rtejustify">Located in Belgium, the new division of ISHS has representation from 135 countries. Dr Patil will be formally inducted mid-August during the International Horticulture Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.</p>.<p class="bodytext rtejustify">Hailing from Dambal village in Sindgi taluk of Vijayapura district, Patil is currently a professor and heads the vegetable and fruit improvement centre at Texas A and M University AgriLife, US. He has devoted his career to understand the role of health-promoting factors by promoting the consumption of fresh and delicious varieties of fruits, vegetables. His relentless research in the horticultural sector has helped improve the agricultural economy and human health in Texas and around the globe.</p>.<p class="bodytext rtejustify">Sharing future plans with <span class="italic">DH</span>, Patil said, “Our plan will be to coordinate with private sector and global organisations to bring out the best in the sector. We will definitely look forward to collaborating with horticultural institutes in India, including the university in Bagalkot, for holding international symposiums and workshops towards evolving better horticultural practices.”</p>
