<p class="title">The Somwarpet Town Panchayat has failed to provide basic amenities in various colonies in its jurisdiction. There are problems galore at the Civic Workers’ Colony in the 11th ward of the Town Panchayat.</p>.<p class="bodytext">A major portion of the stormwater drain with sewage flows in Loaders and Sweepers Colony in Somwarpet. As a result, the entire locality reeks of a nauseating smell.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Owing to the dumping of waste into the stormwater drain, the water remains stagnant, said Loaders Colony resident Ganesh.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The disposal of garbage is a major issue in the Civic Workers’ Colony. The sewage is let directly into the drains in the colony. The open sewage is posing a threat to the residents.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Women in the colony said that a majority of the civic workers and labourers reside in the colony. The Town Panchayat has failed to solve the primary problems faced by them.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Though the members had promised to repair the stormwater drain, it has not been taken up so far. The stormwater drain is constructed in an unscientific manner. There is no point even if it is cleaned. Two canals with sewage water flow in the colony.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“We have to live amid the nauseating smell,” said resident Kaveri.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Another resident Ganesh alleged that sewage enters the damaged drinking water pipeline, thus polluting the water. There is a need to shift the drinking water pipeline from the stormwater drain area.</p>.<p class="bodytext">There is a lack of cleanliness in the colony where civic workers who clean the town reside.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ward member B R Mahesh said, “There are a lot of problems in the ward. All the issues will be solved in a phased manner. The issue of the lack of street lights and drinking water will be solved. The waste will be cleared from the stormwater drain shortly, to facilitate the easy flow of water.”</p>.<p class="bodytext">Town Panchayat president Nalini Ganesh said, “I am well aware of the problems in Loaders Colony. The stormwater drain needs to be cleaned. A delegation from the Town Panchayat has already met the deputy commissioner, seeking funds from the government to take up the works.”</p>.<p class="bodytext">Town Panchayat chief officer Nachappa said, “We will solve the problems in the colony in a phased manner. The work on an anganwadi has been completed in the ward. As per the government guidelines, there is a need to appoint one civic worker for a population of 700. The population in the Town Panchayat jurisdiction is 6,700. However, we have only 10 civic workers. It is difficult to maintain sanitation with a shortage of civic workers.”</p>
