Elevators in most skywalks switched off, barricaded
According to Tushar Girinath, chief commissioner, BBMP, most of the skywalks are maintained under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. 'It is the responsibility of the private players to ensure they are in working condition. They have not been doing it,' he said.

The vertical push of Bengaluru’s skyline is unmistakably fast. But is safety compromised in that zeal to maximize realty space? The rising elevator accidents offer no comfort. Nor does the shocking reality that hundreds of lifts in buildings below the ‘15-metre high-rise’ tag are in dire need of a serious safety check.

Elevator safety: Rising high and falling low
Growing cities cannot still afford to give up their open spaces although the compromise is very often criticised for leaning heavily in favour of spreading the concrete cover rather than green. Naturally, this leads to land price hike, high population concentration and a struggle to retain green cover. All of these have led to a rise in high-rise buildings, and by implication, elevators.
