Coronavirus news highlights: Karnataka sees 973 new Covid-19 cases, 7 deaths
India reported 20,550 new Covid-19 cases, 26,572 recoveries, and 286 deaths in last 24 hours, as per Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. A total of 20 people in India now have the new coronavirus strain, according to ministry data. This includes results of the six who tested positive and were announced to have the new strain on Tuesday. The samples that tested positive for the new strain were 8 from NCDC, Delhi; 7 from NIMHANS, Bengaluru; 2 from CCMB, Hyderabad; 1 from NIBG Kalyani near Kolkata; 1 from NIV, Pune and 1 from IGIB, Delhi. Meanwhile, experts believe that Covid-19 vaccines will work on the new variant. Meanwhile, Britain on Wednesday became the first country in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca as it battles a major winter surge.

India's Covid-19 tally rises to 1,02,45,081 and death toll rises to 1,48,408. Six persons in the country who recently returned from the UK have been found to carry the new Covid-19 strain first identified in the UK. The Ministry of Health said that 70% of all Covid-19 deaths have been reported among men. Samples of Covid-positive flyers who arrived in India from Dec 9 to 22 will be subject to genome sequencing.
