High burden, danger from cancer
The World Cancer Day last week was a reminder of the high burden of the disease in India and the danger it is likely to pose to health and welfare in the coming years. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) report released on the occasion should also serve as a warning about what the disease means to the world and India. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and India accounts for 6% of the deaths. The report says that one in 10 Indians will develop cancer during their lifetime and one in 15 will die of it.
