Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said Jharkhand is "tough state" as far as BJP'prspect in the Assembly elections next month but the saffron party is trying hard to "do well."
"A tough state but we are trying to do well," Sarma told reporters in Guwahati when asked about his assessment about BJP's prospects in the Assembly elections.
Sarma, who is in charge-charge of the party for Jharkhand elections, said he has been working "day and night" to push the BJP's prospects and unseat the JMM-Congress government. "I am even unable to keep track of the developments related to the bypolls in Assam. I am not sure whether I will be able to campaign for the bypolls. Our ministers and the party are doing whatever is required for the bypolls," he said.
Elections for the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly is scheduled in two phases, on November 13 and November 20. Bypolls for five Assembly seats in Assam are also scheduled on November 13. BJP has fielded candidates in three seats while its allies, AGP and UPPL will contest in the remaining two seats. In the 2021 Assembly elections, BJP won in two while AGP and UPPL bagged two seats. Congress won in one.
In Jharkhand, BJP is contesting in 68 seats and is supporting 10 All Jharkhand Students' Union candidates, two JD (U) and one LJP.
Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
