New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday attacked the Narendra Modi government over a spate of terror attacks in in Jammu and Kashmir, the latest being the killing of four soldiers in Doda, with top leader Rahul Gandhi saying that the country's soldiers and their families are bearing the brunt of BJP's "wrong" policies.
Rahul asked the government to take full responsibility for the "repeated" security lapses and take strict action against the culprits, as four Army personnel, including an officer, died after being injured in a gunfight with heavily armed terrorists in Doda district.
"Such horrific incidents happening one after the other is extremely sad and worrying. These continuous terrorist attacks are revealing the poor condition of Jammu and Kashmir. Our soldiers and their families are bearing the brunt of BJP's wrong policies," Rahul posted on 'X'. In this hour of grief, he added, the entire country stands united against terrorism.
A "deeply distressed" Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said no words of strong and unequivocal condemnation would suffice for these acts of violence being perpetrated by cowardly terrorists.
“The spate of terror attacks that has gripped Jammu and Kashmir in the past 36 days, needs careful recalibration in our security strategy. The Modi government is acting as if everything is 'business as usual' and nothing has changed,” he said.
“They must know that increasingly the Jammu region is bearing the brunt of these attacks. We cannot endanger our National Security by indulging in false bravado, fake narratives and high-decibel whitewashing,” he said.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi said the increasing terrorist attacks raise serious questions.
"Should the role of the country's political leadership be limited to expressing grief over every martyrdom and then remaining silent? In the last 78 days, 11 terrorist attacks have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir. Thirteen army and police personnel were martyred in these attacks. On 9 June, 9 pilgrims were killed in an attack on a passenger bus. What measures is the government taking on the diplomatic-strategic front to stop these attacks and the martyrdom of our soldiers?" she said.
"Sometimes in the name of demonetisation, sometimes in the name of Article 370, our soldiers are paying the price of fake claims of eradicating terrorism by sacrificing their lives. Till when will we keep counting the bodies of our martyrs?" she added.
Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said the string of terror attacks in recent times is a "completely new development". He said one should rise above party politics and give a strong collective response, but at the same time the question should also be asked on what happened to "all those big claims made by the self-proclaimed non-biological Prime Minister and the self-proclaimed Chanakya".
Party Media and Publicity Department chairperson Pawan Khera said the country wants answers. "Countries are not run on just slogans," Khera posted on X.
